Starting Out Routine Cards
Who are the Starting Out cards for?
Starting Out is designed for babies and toddlers who are just beginning to communicate, including children who are using few or no words.
Are the cards suitable if my child isn't talking yet?
Yes. The cards are designed for children at the early stages of communication, including children who are not yet using words. The ideas focus on supporting communication without requiring your child to already be talking.
What age are the cards for?
Starting Out is designed with babies and toddlers in the early stages of communication in mind. Every child develops communication skills at their own pace, so the cards focus on your child's current stage rather than a specific age.
What's included?
Starting Out includes 10 double-sided routine cards and a Parent Guide. The cards cover familiar everyday routines and provide simple, evidence-based ideas for supporting early communication.
Using the cards
How do I use the Starting Out cards?
Choose a routine that fits what you're already doing together, try one simple idea, then pause and notice how your child responds. The Parent Guide explains the approach and helps you get started.
Do I need special toys or activities?
No. The cards are designed around everyday routines such as mealtimes, bath time, getting dressed, books and bedtime. You don't need special toys, activities or extra preparation.
How often should I use the cards?
There's no set amount of time or number of times you need to use them. Choose a routine that naturally fits into your day and try one idea at a time. Small, consistent moments can add up.
